Research over the past several decades have led experts studying addiction and substance abuse to believe that applying resilience theory to prevention protocol is the most effective way of reducing the number of young people abusing drugs or becoming addicted (National Institute on Drug Abuse, UC Davis Metanalysis, DEA Community Outreach, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services). Curriculum that is grounded in facts about drugs and alcohol, psycho educational information about why people abuse, and alternative coping skills all support resilience theory. Curriculum also needs to be student centered, interactive, and provide opportunities to practice the skills discussed. My curriculum includes a student directed research project and peer presentation; teen panel discussing what to expect in high school; a community panel representing recovery programs, recovering addicts, and legal implications of drug/alcohol use; positive coping tools; and refusal techniques.
